In-Tank Die-Off: Planning Tool or Compliance Shortcut?

The idea is seductive: organisms die naturally during a voyage. If you have enough time at sea, do you really need full treatment? The In-Tank Die-Off Estimator exists to answer that question quantitatively—but it comes with critical caveats.

How Die-Off Works

Organisms in ballast water don’t live forever. They die off through:

  • Temperature shock – Moving from warm coastal to cooler open ocean
  • Salinity shock – Moving between different salinity environments
  • Starvation – Lack of nutrients in ballast tanks
  • Predation – By other organisms in the ballast water
  • Natural senescence – Natural life cycle completion

Algal cysts are the hard cases—they can survive essentially indefinitely in ballast tanks. This is why treatment systems must actually kill them, not rely on natural mortality.
