How Die-Off Works
Organisms in ballast water don’t live forever. They die off through:
- Temperature shock – Moving from warm coastal to cooler open ocean
- Salinity shock – Moving between different salinity environments
- Starvation – Lack of nutrients in ballast tanks
- Predation – By other organisms in the ballast water
- Natural senescence – Natural life cycle completion

The die-off estimator handles different organism classes:

Algal cysts are the hard cases—they can survive essentially indefinitely in ballast tanks. This is why treatment systems must actually kill them, not rely on natural mortality.
